Other Prosexual Substances
Better Sex and Longer Life
Life-extension physician Dr. Ward Dean regularly prescribes deprenyl in his practice. He says that patients most frequently comment about its strong prosexual qualities. Although deprenyl's sexual effects are usually most evident in men over 50, the compound is nevertheless developing a reputation for consistently enhancing libido and sexual pleasure among men and women of all ages including those who consider themselves sexually vigorous and healthy to begin with.
According to one 29-year-old woman, deprenyl dramatically increases her level of sexual desire "approaching that of a true aphrodisiac." If deprenyl does not ignite the passions, as the legendary love potions of lore were believed to, at least it appears to have crossed the critical threshold.
Remarkable
Life-Extension Benefits
Not only can deprenyl help enhance the sexual experience, it may add years to enjoy these healthy pleasures. In a much celebrated experiment, Knoll and his colleagues uncovered the life-extending potential of this wonder drug.
The study tracked the longevity of 132 male rats. When the trial began, the animals were 2 years old the equivalent of early middle age for human males. The control group consisted of half of the rats, which received a placebo, while the other half received continuous, low-doses of deprenyl (the same dosage that maximized sexual activity in the previously described trial).
The average lifespan of the placebo-treated rats was about 147 weeks, while the average lifespan for the deprenyl-treated group was about 191 weeks. This represents a significant 30 percent increase in average lifespan. In fact, the entire placebo group was dead several weeks before the first deprenyl-treated animal died.
In addition, the vast majority of the deprenyl-treated animals lived beyond the maximum lifespan of their species. The maximum lifespan for the species used in these experiments is 182 weeks; however, the longest lifespan of the animals in the deprenyl group reached nearly 226 weeks a 40 percent increase in maximum lifespan! When translated into human years, deprenyl could hypothetically increase the maximum human lifespan of 120 to about 170 years! According to Ward Dean, M.D., "This is the first time that the maximum lifespan of any species has been extended through pharmacologic means."
Safety and Precautions: Deprenyl has maintained a good track record for safety and effectiveness throughout Europe for over 25 years. Most of its side effects have been observed in studies of elderly people using the drug in combination with L-dopa for Parkinson's disease.
The side effects most likely to be experienced with deprenyl are those which characterize dopamine stimulation: nausea, headache, dizziness and possibly vomiting. Such experiences are usually transient and can generally be avoided by beginning with small dosages which can be increased over time (see Dosages).
Excessive amounts of deprenyl can also manifest amphetamine-like responses: overstimulation, sexual overstimulation, irritability, emotional hypersensitivity, vivid dreams, nightmares and insomnia.
Also, Deprenyl should not be used with meperidine (Demerol). This precaution may extend to other opiates and opiate-like drugs. It should also not be used in conjunction with milacemide, a cognition-enhancer that is metabolized by MAO B. Finally, deprenyl should not be used with other MAO inhibitors.
Dosage and Timing: The proper dosage of deprenyl is dependent upon age, individual biochemistry and the desired effects. It can be taken very safely in dosages of up to 10 mg a day. The addition of phenylalanine with or without vitamin B-6 may drastically reduce the required dosage, especially when it is taken for depression or cognitive enhancement. (Note: Phenylalanine supplements should not be used by people with PKU, phenylketonuria.)
Joseph Knoll recommends 10 to 15 mg per week for healthy individuals, beginning at the age of 45. Two or three 5 mg dosages a week may be taken by people of a broad age range who use deprenyl for life-extension and prosexual purposes. However, the best dosage depends on age and condition; therefore, we recommend starting with a low dose of 1 mg, once or twice a week. This can be increased over a few weeks until the desired results are achieved.
Many are able to achieve a short-term prosexual effect, as well as cognitive stimulation with a single dose of deprenyl in the 5 milligram range; however, a disciplined, continuous regimen is recommended for life extension and long-term sexual applicability.
Legality and Availability
Deprenyl is available by prescription in the United States under the trade name Eldepryl. While its only approved use is for Parkinsonism, some physicians may be willing to prescribe it for other reasons, as there are no legal restrictions against this.
Deprenyl can also be obtained legally, without a prescription, from overseas mail-order sources, as long as the quantity ordered can reasonably be considered no more than a three-month personal supply. Please note that we still recommend working with your personal physician.
Availability: One reliable source for deprenyl is International Anti-Aging Systems (IAS). You can write , email, or fax to the following for ordering information:

GHB Sexual Tonic and More
Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB) is a naturally occurring metabolite found throughout mammalian biochemistry. It occurs in abundance throughout the human body, where it is intimately involved in brain and nervous system functioning. It is also a chemical cousin to Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), an important neurotransmitter of the mammalian nervous system.
GHB has many desirable properties as well as therapeutic uses, ranging from sexual enhancement to cervical dilation during childbirth. It has been used safely and successfully throughout the United States and Europe in the treatment of addictions and narcolepsy, and it is also considered a safe and effective treatment for insomnia, anxiety, depression and as an aid to childbirth. In Europe, GHB is readily available and is sold over-the-counter (OTC) in some countries and by prescription in others.
Historical Background
Surprisingly, GHB was synthesized three years before it was found to be a naturally occurring molecule in the brain. It was discovered in 1960, when a French physician by the name of Henri-Marie Laborit synthesized it in his laboratory. Laborit was interested in the impact of GABA on the nervous system, but he was unable to get it to cross the blood-brain barrier. By adding a hydroxyl (OH) group to butyric acid, the resulting GHB molecule was able to cross the blood-brain barrier and serve as a precursor to GABA in the brain.
Three years later two researchers were surprised to find that GHB occurred naturally in the brain. Still later research confirmed that it is, in fact, a natural brain metabolite. Since then, hundreds of scientific papers have been published regarding its many benefits.
Although it occurs naturally in the human body, the compound is considered a legal drug in France, Italy and other countries. And despite its 40-year history as a safe and natural substance, in November 1990 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared it an "illegally marketed drug," claiming it was a danger to public health. For more information on its legal status and wide-reaching health benefits, we recommend reading "GHB, the Natural Mood Enhancer" by Ward Dean, M.D., John Morgenthaler, and Steven William Fowkes.
Sexual Specifics
The scientific and medical communities have traditionally been extremely reluctant to ascribe aphrodisiac properties to any substance, although their position has relaxed somewhat in recent years. It is perhaps a testament to the power of GHB's prosexual effect that they were acknowledged by Laborit in the scientific literature as early as 1972: "A last point should still be mentioned: the [GHB] action on man which could be called 'aphrodisiac,'" wrote Laborit. "We cannot present any animal experiment on this subject. However, the oral form has now been sufficiently used so that, as generally agreed, there can be no doubt as to its [aphrodisiac effects] existence."
A New Kind of Aphrodisiac
Aphrodisiacs are usually considered to increase sex drive, sexual desire and sexual abilities, such as extended and multiple orgasms. While GHB exhibits some of these qualities, it appears to have four distinct prosexual characteristics: disinhibition, heightened sense perception, enhanced male erectile capacity and increased power of orgasm in both sexes.
Disinhibition
GHB encourages disinhibition by having a loosening and relaxing effect on psychological restraints. A number of users have specifically noted its disinhibition effect among women. It especially helps break through the tentative and nervous qualities that can accompany an encounter with a new sexual partner.
GHB also heightens sense perceptions, especially that of touch. The senses reportedly become more acute, electrical, velvet-like, sparkling. As one women put it, GHB "enhanced my experience sensuality and produced in me an incredible sense eroticism."
Firm, Longer-Lasting Erections
Men report that GHB helps them achieve erections more quickly and also produces firmer and longer-lasting erections. In her book Love Potions: a Guide to Aphrodisiacs and Sexual Pleasures, Cynthia M. Watson, M.D., discloses the account of a man in his 70s who missed the loss of his usual morning erections after undergoing cardiac surgery. After several years, the man took GHB and his morning erections returned.
Another man in his 30s compares its effects with MDMA, an intimacy drug also known as Ecstasy. He said that "with GHB I get the best of both worlds." As he described it: "I get as warm and affectionate as I do with Ecstasy, and I am also able to maintain the intensity of my sexual edge." According to this man, MDMA lacks the latter effect.
More Powerful Orgasms
Both women and men note that the right dosage of GHB can produce a more powerful experience of orgasm and ejaculation. Women often report that GHB intensifies their orgasms and also makes them last longer; however, its impact on female orgasm is highly sensitive and small doses have a more desirable effect than larger ones. A women in her 40s reported that a very small dose of GHB, taken just before sex, produced more intense and prolonged orgasms, which she described as "quite unusual." GHB has also been attributed with the capacity to increase clitoral and vaginal sensitivity.
While the right amount of GHB can produce a more powerful experience of ejaculation for men, its effects on male ejaculation are also dose-sensitive. As with women, too much can make orgasm difficult. When it was available at health food stores, one supplier advertised that GHB "markedly delays ejaculation."
Laborit also observed this, and noted: "The phenomenon may even reach a stage of complete absence of ejaculation without causing any of the displeasure or anguish generally connected with such a phenomenon." For this reason alone, some men who suffer from premature ejaculation should consider GHB.
GHB and
Growth Hormone Release
One side-benefit of GHB is that it triggers the release of "youthing" growth hormone (GH) from the pituitary gland. This was most clearly demonstrated in a Japanese study in which six healthy male volunteers received intravenous injections of 2.5 grams of GHB. Significant increases in plasma growth hormone were observed at 30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes post-injection.
Growth hormone has demonstrated significant anti-aging capabilities, including bone- and muscle-building effects, reduced body fat and thicker, more flexible skin. When GHB was officially condemned by the FDA in 1990, its primary use had been among body builders and weight lifters who relied heavily on its GH-stimulating properties to help increase their muscle size and strength.
Safety and Precautions: Most of the published literature on GHB shows it to be a safe and non-toxic substance, metabolized within two or three hours. Because of its powerful relaxant effects, this product must be used with wisdom and caution. It should never be mixed with central nervous system depressants, including tranquilizers, alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines, barbiturates) All of these other substances can depress or even stop breathing.
Recent alcohol consumption with GHB can have a cross-metabolic effect, making the combined effects unpredictable and potentially dangerous. For this reason, it is best to avoid alcohol when taking GHB. It is also important to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while under the influence of GHB.
Dosage and Timing: GHB should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably three to four hours after the last meal. A full stomach will delay its effects, and increases the chances of nausea or vomiting. GHB has a rapid onset when taken orally and is usually felt within 15 to 20 minutes of consumption. If the individual has chosen to fast (abstain from food intake) to enhance its effects, it will be noticed even sooner.
For prosexual purposes, the initial dose should be about an one-eighth to a quarter of a gram of GHB taken approximately 20 minutes before sex. Based on its effects, the dosage may be increased in very small increments with about an hour in between ingestions.
The amount of GHB required for prosexual results will vary from person to person and even the slightest overestimation can seriously hinder plans for an exciting evening.
Availability: While it is considered safe and effective treatment for many conditions in other countries, GHB is not available in the United States. It can still be obtained legally from some overseas mail-order sources, as long as the quantity ordered can reasonably be considered as no more than a three-month personal supply. Some states, however, disallow its import in which case GHB precursor products are recommended. An Internet search can turn up a great deal of information on GHB precursors and sources for them.

Growth Hormone
In a widely publicized study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it was revealed that growth hormone could dramatically turn back the biological aging clock. The researchers who conducted the study administered growth hormone injections to a group of 12 men ranging from 61 to 81 years of age, for a six-month period. The results were astonishing. Not only did GH reverse many degenerative conditions in these men, but it increased their lean body mass by 9 percent, their bone density by nearly 2 percent, skin density by 7 percent and it decreased their body fat by 14 percent.
The 1997 release of the book "Grow Young with HGH," by Dr. Ronald Klatz, president of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, changed the lives of many who were seeking the Eternal Fountain of Youth. The book refers to growth hormone as a perfectly safe therapy for effectively reversing the effects of aging. According to Klatz, the many advantages of growth hormone include a better sex life, increased muscle tone and fat loss, better cardiac output, decreased wrinkling, improved memory, enhanced immune function and the prevention of chronic, degenerative diseases.
However, other leading doctors, such as Michael Colgan, M.D., of the Colgan Institute of Nutritional Science in San Diego, vehemently oppose growth hormone, warning that it causes more harm than good. Colgan maintains that injections of the hormone destroy the pancreas, raise blood sugar and insulin levels, and result in dangerous consequences to the body's delicately balanced hormone system.
GH injections remain controversial and prohibitive in cost for many. Further research may be necessary to determine its long-term safetyespecially for younger people who intend to use it for prosexual and life-extension purposes. In the meantime, arginine (see Chapter 1) and GHB (see this chapter) have demonstrated the capacity to safely increase the body's own production of growth hormone.
