Introduction

The Smart Guide to Better Sex is exactly that: a smart and practical guide on the intelligent use of supplements and herbs to enhance the sexual experience. Complete with dosages, side effects and precautions, it offers thoroughly researched and documented information based on reputable sources — including double blind placebo-controlled and animal studies, historical significance, some folklore and even anecdotal sources. In short, it is a concise, responsible manual that can help bring the sizzle back to your sex life.

What To Expect

In this age of increasing sexual awareness, there is a growing trend toward the desire for better sex. What exactly is better sex? For some it means better performance and potency, while for others it means a deeper awareness of passion and personal pleasure. Whatever the definition, this user-friendly guide features helpful solutions for men and women of all ages, with tips on some exceptional supplements that can make every experience extraordinary.

Included is the latest on performance-enhancing supplements that can enhance sex for both men and women. The book introduces herbal, nutritional and hormonal supplements, as well as the most recent information on pheromones. Of the many items presented here, all come together on one point: Each can enhance or improve one or more of the following: potency, sex drive, erection, vaginal lubrication, fertility, frequency or intensity of orgasm, mood, stamina, endurance, skin sensitivity, enjoyment and even intimacy.

Those facing the challenges of premature ejaculation, loss of interest, impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm will find this information especially valuable. And individuals looking to improve sexual and overall health will find it refreshing to learn that many of these products can simultaneously enhance immune function, slow aging, alleviate depression, assist in fat loss, improve memory and more.

The Body-Brain Connection

It's no coincidence that some of our best-selling Smart Guides™ help people think better and experience more pleasure out of life. We've found that very often, the two go hand in hand. The brain and the sex organs may be anatomically far apart, but in reality they are closely related. It has often been said that the brain is actually the biggest and most important sexual organ.

According to Ward Dean, M.D.,life-extension physician and co-author of Smart Drugs & Nutrients and Smart Drugs II, "anything that improves brain function is probably going to improve sexual functioning." It's no wonder, then, that scientists are discovering that choline, for example, which primarily is considered a brain (and liver) nutrient, is also important for healthy sexual functioning. And ginkgo biloba, which is most often thought of as a "memory herb," has more recently been found to enhance circulation to the sex organs and even to improve potency. Through our research, we have identified several products that show this cross-over benefit.

Not A Substitute for
Healthy Relationships

While the supplements discussed here can certainly bring the bedroom back to life, they are definitely not a quick fix for a sex life that is troubled due to poor relationship or communication skills. Nor is it a substitute for what constitutes true intimacy, commitment or emotional connection. True, these are closely linked with good sex; however, they are qualities that must be nurtured over time within the scope of the relationship. If sexual problems persist due to psychological blocks, we highly recommend the expert guidance of a trusted and knowledgeable person.

The Sexual-Spiritual Connection

For many, love, intimacy, communication, tenderness and spirituality are essential for good sex. In fact, the more of these elements that come into play, the more rewarding and fulfilling an erotic encounter can be. Sexual health often encompasses the spiritual nature of sex itself.

A poll in the January/February 1999 issue of New Age Magazine reflects the importance of intimacy and communication for good sex. The survey queried American men and women as to how they define sex, including their likes and dislikes. Of the 1,300 respondents, 82 percent agree with the statement "Sex is much more than intercourse," and 75 percent perceive sex as "most often spiritual" with a spouse or committed partner.

Wisdom of the Ancients

In some countries with ancient spiritual roots, such as India, sex is revered as an integral path to spirituality. In Tantric Yoga, for example, the lotus represents the dormant life force in the human body, and is depicted as a snake coiled three times around a lingam or phallus at the base of the spine. The basis of some Yogic teachings center around the release and distribution of this energy, also known as kundalini. Tantrists view the kundalini as closely linked with sexuality. One of the ways it is activated and channeled is through ritualized sexual conjugation. The culmination of the kundalini process is viewed as the perfect union between lover and beloved.

In other Asian countries such as China, sexual energy is believed to be the key to immortality. The balanced interplay of male and female sexual energy is often represented as a yin/yang symbol, portraying the masculine and feminine energies as being fundamental to cosmic creation.

Chinese Taoists used an extensive array of herbal aphrodisiacs and highly specialized practices, believing these would increase in sexual energy, enhance overall health and elevate spirituality. Their cultural erotica are based on the principles of sexual energy modulation and flow, and a variety of sexual practices have been designed to increase vitality and life energy. In fact, many Taoists interpret optimal sexual energy in the human body as fundamental to mental, physical and spiritual health.

Overcoming Sexual Repression

Other cultures, including much of Western civilization, are pervaded by psychological repression based on generations of misguided religious interpretations. Unfortunately, these have resulted in deep divisions of body, mind and soul. As a result many have learned to regard sex as evil, dirty or sinful, and are often sexually repressed. Since sexuality is a powerful force and difficult to restrain, the repressed typically find a less conscious outlet — such as deviant sexual behavior.

Negative beliefs about sexuality may also result in the inability to express or experience sexual pleasure or even in frigidity. After a thorough medical examination to rule out a physical reason for sexual problems, counseling is often helpful. Barring any physical or obvious mental problems, some of the pro-sexual supplements presented in this book can further assist an individual in opening new channels of sexual energy.

Offset Negative Sexual Effects

Today, the search for sexual rejuvenation has intensified, as more people experience a loss of sexual interest and performance, sometimes beginning as early as in their 30s. According to Professors Kim and Lipshultz of Baylor College of Medicine, 60 percent of men in their 60s have sexual problems. As it turns out, prescription medications are often the culprit.

This book can help individuals overcome unwanted sexual side effects associated with prescription medications. Flouxetine (Prozac®), beta blockers and other medications have been known to dramatically diminish or even extinguish sexual responsiveness or orgasm in both men and women. Many of the herbs and supplements discussed herein can help to offset these effects. And for those who are healthy but experience some degree of age-related sexual decline, this will also be welcome information.

Overcoming Impotence and
Other Sexual Problems

Sexuality is so much a part of a person's being, that even the slightest imbalance can turn one's world upside down. A study in the February 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicated that over one-third of all American adults have experienced some type of sexual dysfunction. The study explained the "huge reaction" to Viagra®, for which nearly 8 million prescriptions have been filled. According to Edward O. Laumann, Ph.D., one of the authors of the study, "People hadn't a clue that sexual dysfunction was so prevalent."

The herbal and nutritional market seems to have heard the call. After witnessing the enormous response to products such as Viagra® and Proscar® (two "top-selling" prescription medications for male potency and prostate problems), the market is exploding with natural alternatives. In fact, by May of 1999, the health and natural products market witnessed more new sex product introductions [for men and women] than any other year.

Better Sex, Safer Sex, Naturally

Prosexual supplements can benefit almost everyone. While it is true that sexuality is not strictly physical and biochemical, some substances and biological influences can make a world of difference. And although a variety of drugs (including Viagra®) are prescribed for impotence or sexual deficiencies, many have undesirable side effects, whereas carefully researched and selected natural alternatives generally have a much higher margin of safety.

As we enter the new millennium, people worldwide are becoming aware of the attainability of meaningful intimacy and the delight of sexual ecstasy. The supplements presented in this book are chosen based on their ability to help achieve this goal, as well as on their safety. The Smart Guide to Better Sex will introduce you to ancient and exotic remedies, as well as to new and novel supplements designed to bring fresh meaning to your sexual enjoyment.
