Lara graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude from Wheaton College (Norton, MA, 1970), received her Master's in Religious Studies with Honors from Yale Divinity School (New Haven, CT, 1973), Master's in Literature from the University of Washington (Seattle, 1986), and has been a licensed massage therapist since 1986. Avocations include Pilates, motorcycling, organic gardening, healthy cooking.
